When in Montenegro
Ulcinj, a less known delight full of legends tour
Do you know which famous person was imprisoned in Montenegro for 5 years? We will only tell you that the old name for Ulcinj was Dolcinium, and that the main character of the famous novel "Don Quijote" was Dulcinea. You can think of it as a coincidence but we love telling this famous legend to our visitors. Don’t be surprised with monuments dedicated to the world-famous writer, Miguel de Cervantes in this town.
If you feel like discovering more about this special place, When in Montenegro, visit Ulcinj, an altogether charming little town where many cultures crossed paths and left their mark like in other Montenegrin coastal towns.
Ulcinj Salina
To better understand the importance of this town for our country and the economy, we will start this tour by visiting the Ulcinj Salina- largest salt pan in the Adriatic. Even though the salt harvest stopped in 2013, in June 2019 the Salina was declared a Natural Park and thus a Protected Area because these salt pans are a paradise for bird migration. You can often find flamingos, which is the “signature” species, along with Dalmatian pelicans, herons, water frogs, pond turtles, European otters and many more. Moreover, Ulcinj Salina was a well-known Montenegrin brand- a product of the sun and the sea. We will take a walk around the salina to see the birds. Hopefully, we’ll see the flamingo colony- one of only two places in Europe you can see wild flamingo colonies.
Stari grad (Ulcinj Old Town)
Ulcinj’s old town was founded by the Illyrians and has been continuously added to by various rulers over the last 2,500 years. This Old Town with its medieval walls preserves the monuments of some of the most famous historical figures such as Miguel Cervantes and Sabbatai Zevi, and together we will find out the connection they have with this place. The Citadel, the church/mosque, the Balšić Tower, the Venetian building Dvori Balšića, a turkish fountain, and many more are a must see on this tour. The museum inside the Old Town has a collection of Roman and Ottoman artifacts and there’s a church dating back to 1510 that was turned into a mosque in the 17th century. There is also a Slave Square that reminds us that Ulcinj’s history includes a bit of slave trading. Initially, many wealthy people from other countries would be attacked and taken prisioner and brought here. They would be kept here until their families paid to have them returnded. Maybe that’s what happened with Miguel de Cervantes? Later, slaves were brought from Africa and sold in the square. Those who were lucky enough to stay were freed and became citizens involved in seafaring or agriculture. As evidence of this, there are still black families living in Ulcinj today. We’ll visit these places in order to discover many legends and stories that this town modestly hides.
Promenade and pine wood
Walking down the beautiful promenade next to a main beach will get us to a not so touristic pine wood with many hidden beaches. A walk in pine wood is known as a local cure for ills like asthma. Depends on the weather and the season, you can have a free time to swim in the Adriatic sea if you wish. Lunch break in the pine wood or in the touristic promenade along the main beach called Mala plaža (Small beach).
Olive cove Valdanos
After your free time, we will have to leave Ulcinj, but on our way back, we won’t finish this tour like tourists but like locals! My gift for you will be a panoramic road that leads us through a beautiful olive cove Valdanos. The cove is covered with 18,000 olive trees that are up to 2,000 years old. We’ll stop at a panoramic viewpoint where you can take photos of the Adriatic sea and olive trees and enjoy the beautiful sunset.
