A country of the land and the sea, Montenegro boasts 294 km of coastline and its beautiful little towns are real jewels on the Adriatic Sea. Sveti Stefan is a jewel in particular, the famous postcard, the most photographed place in Montenegro, visited by worldwide famous people. How about seeing in person this picturesque island, which has evolved from a 15th century trading port to the most exclusive resort in this country?

If you’re willing to do so, When in Montenegro, visit Budva to enjoy the country’s most visited town and hear the stories of its glorious past mixed with today’s present.

Petrovac

In the 3rd century AD, the Romans built their summer villas on this lovely bay, so nowadays the mosaic floors of those villas can be seen in this beautiful little town. A calm walk along a beautiful, 600-meter-long sandy beach, with sights of diverse Mediterranean plants, cottages, villas and a 16th century Venetian Fortress with two islets off in the distance will be the start of this tour. We’ll climb a 16th -century fortress Castio, built by Venetians, which is located in the northern part of the beach. The upper part of Castio has a memorial plaque dedicated to the fallen soldiers of Montenegro during both World Wars. Another interesting thing about Petrovac is its Crvena Komuna (Red Commune) building. After the electoral victory in 1919, Petrovac became the first communist town of the Adriatic Sea. This event is still celebrated today where you can see a modern art gallery and revolutionary museum.

Panoramic roads and monasteries

Montenegro has been on the border line between Eastern and Western cultures long since, so the richness of its cultural history can be seen in dashingly painted Ortodox monasteries, elegant Catholic churches, neat minarets of mosques and many fortresses built by various conquerors that have fought over this land. On our way to Budva, we’ll see medieval Orthodox monasteries that face the sea and we’ll stop to visit one of them. We’ll enjoy the peace these holy places have and admire vivid frescoes in Praskvica, Reževići or Rustovo Monastery. From Petrovac to Budva there is a 20minute ride with a great view of the Adriatic Sea.

Sveti Stefan

After visiting the monasteries, we finally arrive at Montenegro’s most photographed site and the symbol of our Adriatic coast, a charming island called Sveti Stefan. The island, dating back to 15th century, is a fortified village connected to the mainland by a narrow passage. Today it is a part of luxurious Aman resort, off limits to all except paying guests. Renewed stone buildings house 51 rooms, cottages and suits on the island in a perfect harmony with the centuries of history. We can’t enter the island but we can admire it from the beachside or the nearby viewpoint. Not far from the island is arguably the most beautiful beach in Montengro, – Miločer or King’s beach, and it belongs to the Aman resort.

Stari grad Budva (Old Town)

Leaving Sveti Stefan behind us, we arrive in Budva, the country’s most visited destination. Thanks to its captivating Old Town, vibrant bars, Blue Flag beaches and busy night clubs, this town hosts about 300 000 tourists every summer. Nearby beaches such as Bečići, Pržno, Mogren, Kamenovo, Ploče can be crowded with sun-seeking families and tourists. The town has been settled since the 5th century BC and together we’ll see the Necropolis dating from this period and fortified Stari grad (Old Town) from medieval times. Braided streets and Venetian walls from 15th century surrounded by the clear sea is the main attraction of Budva. Due to the strong earthquake in 1979, the town has been completely rebuilt and now there are more shops, souvenirs, bars and restaurants than residencies. The oldest part is Citadela, which offers striking views. Nearby there are interesting churches such as 16th-century St John’s church, 9th -century Santa Maria in Punta, the church of Saint Sava from 12th century and the church of Holy Trinity from 19th century. They’re example of the cozy relationship between Ortodox and Catholic Christians in this area. In front of the Old Town, there is Sveti Nikola Island, locally known as “Hawaii”, Montenegro’s largest island, stretching to nearly 2km. We won’t reveal everything, we invite you to visit all of this with us with many hidden spots that only locals know about.

Lunch break at Paštrovska gora

If you haven’t already seen the perfect spot where to have a lunch break, our recommendation is something off road. On our way back to Bar (or our meeting point), we suggest to you a feel-good experience in Paštrovska gora as we go for a ride on the panoramic road with breathtaking views. We’ll visit a high-quality and family friendly place that features unique cuisine and dazzling Adriatic Sea views. You’ll have the unbeatable combination of home cooked food and homemade wine, liquors and juices, served to us by the real locals. There is a chance to buy their products and their famous olive oil.
